Aurora borealis expected to be visible overhead from Utqiaġvik to Maine

Weather permitting, highly active auroral displays will light up the night sky

Weather permitting, highly active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Utqiaġvik, Alaska to as far south as Maine tonight and tomorrow night.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a geomagnetic storm watch for the evening of March 15-16, indicating that there is a high probability of strong auroral activity.

The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, is a natural light display that occurs when charged particles from the sun's atmosphere interact with the Earth's magnetic field. These particles are mostly electrons and protons that are accelerated by the solar wind and travel along the Earth's magnetic field lines towards the poles.

The best time to see the aurora borealis is during the dark hours of the night, when the sky is clear and there is little or no light pollution. The aurora can appear in a variety of colors, including green, red, blue, and purple.

If you are hoping to see the aurora borealis, NOAA recommends finding a spot with a clear view of the northern horizon. You may also want to use a camera to capture the display.
